Sky-blue Aster, Symphyotrichum oolentangiense

$15.00

Sky-blue aster is a graceful near cousin of smooth blue aster, being differentiated, upon closer inspection, by its relatively rough feeling leaves. Near the base, these leaves take on a pleasant heart shaped appearance. It can also be differentiated by the light and airy stems that its buds eventually form on, compared to the relatively stalky stems of smooth blue aster. Comfortable growing in a wide range of well draining soil types, it is the comparatively dryer species of the two.

Asters are the classic companions of goldenrods in the fall, their complimentary colors bringing a natural balance to the late summer landscape. Sky-blue aster, like most natives, benefits many different pollinators as well as serving as the host plant for Silvery Checkerspot and the Pearl Crescent butterflies.
