Big Bluestem, Andropogon gerardii
$15.00
Big bluestem is perhaps the the most iconic of the “big four” tallgrass prairie grasses (big bluestem, Indiangrass, little bluestem, and switchgrass). It is an important host plant for a wide range of native pollinators, a valuable food source for birds, and habitat for numerous small mammals.
In a garden setting big bluestem can serve as a striking accent plant, but careful planning is required. Big bluestem can grow between 3 and 8 feet in height depending on available moisture. It is a bunch grass that will not spread much by rhizomes, but the plant may need to be divided every 3 to 4 years to keep its size manageable.
Big bluestem offers year-round visual interest with vibrant green foliage in spring, its unique “turkey foot” seed heads in summer, and striking copper and bronze tones in fall. In winter, its tall stalks and seed heads add vertical structure and contrast, often highlighted by frost or snow. This dynamic grass brings seasonal beauty while providing important habitat for native wildlife.
