Pale-spike lobelia is a subtle yet lovely addition to a diverse native planting. Growing up to 2 feet tall, this upright plant features delicate white flowers that bloom in late June. The crisp, sharp lines of the flowers stand out beautifully against the surrounding foliage and just beg you to lean in for a closer look. Pale-spike lobelia thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils, although it can tolerate occasional dry spells. When grown in rich soils, it can benefit from having nearby plants for support.

The blossoms of pale-spike lobelia attract a variety of small native bees and, like other lobelias, even the occasional hummingbird! Additionally, it serves as a host plant for certain butterfly species, contributing to local biodiversity. This low-maintenance plant is perfect for adding height and elegance to your garden. Deadheading spent blooms can encourage additional flowering and maintain a neat appearance. Pair it with other moisture-loving natives like prairie blazing star (Liatris pycnostachya) and swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) for a stunning display of summer blooms!
