Pleated Gentian Gentiana affinis
$17.00
The pleated gentian is one of the more rare gentians in Minnesota. According to the Minnesota DNR, it is a species of special concern that seems to be found only in very specific conditions along the margins of northwestern Minnesota. Also known as northern gentian, Rocky Mountain gentian, it is—as the name implies—a primary resident of the Rocky Mountains. There, clear on the other side of the Great Plains, it grows abundantly in alpine meadows, bog edges, and open forests. A spirit of the west, of the mountains, growing here on the edge of our home territory!
It is an open gentian, much like the more common downy gentian, but is a bit smaller, lighter in color, and has small speckles within its bell shaped flower that is reminiscent of the stars in the night sky. Gentians like these can take a few years to establish and may be slow to bloom, but the reward is worth the wait. Their refined growth habit, rich blue color, and ecological importance make them a standout addition to restoration projects and specialty gardens alike.
